Why do dash lights flash on while driving?

While driving down the road, you may notice your dash lights flashing. This can be alarming, but it does usually not cause concern. In most cases, the flashing lights are simply an indication that your car's computer is running a self-diagnostic test. When you start your car, the computer runs a check of all the systems to make sure everything is working properly. If the computer detects a problem with any of the systems, it will turn on the corresponding dash light to alert you. In some cases, the computer may also flash the lights to indicate a pending problem that doesn't require immediate attention. In most cases, a flashing dash light is nothing to worry about.
