What are lean bank 1 and bank 2?

Bank 1 and bank 2 refer to the cylinder banks in an engine. The cylinders in each bank are numbered consecutively, starting with number one. So, bank 1 would include cylinders one through four (or six, eight, ten, etc.), while bank 2 would include cylinders five through eight (or seven, nine, eleven, etc.). Lean bank 1 and lean bank 2 refer to a situation where there is not enough fuel being delivered to the cylinders in each respective bank. This can cause the engine to run less efficiently and potentially overheat. In some cases, it can also lead to damage to the catalytic converter.
